Q:Why does a firefighter wear red suspenders?
A: To keep his pants up!

The personal protective gear that a firefighter wears today is very specialized, heat/flame resistant, and very high-tech. There are many styles available, and plenty of new materials... here is a typical firefighter's gear. Average weight (including airpak): 50 pounds.

Helmet: Made of a thermoplastic (or resin coated fiberglass) outer shell for high-impact protection and heat resistance, and a shatterproof face shield. Very strong and lightweight. Some helmets have Kevlar blended in their shells and foam padding on the inside for more comfort.
Hood: Nomex hood to protect your head and neck from flames.
Coat: Made of PBI or Nomex, with 3 layers for protection: an outer shell, moisture barrier, and inner thermal liner. Many have leather trim.
    Gloves: Leather and nomex.
Pants: Made of PBI or Nomex, same construction as coat. Usually have pockets to put tools in.
Boots: Poly-rubber on the outside and wool on the inside. Also available in leather.
    Airpack: Scott 2.2 air pack.
Irons: Haligan and fireaxe - the tools of the trade.

    Affilliations

Affiliations are some of a firefighters best and most useful tools. Being affiliated with other agencies allows to have access to equipment, manpower, and information that we may not have within our own department.
Madbury is affiliated with the following agencies:

    Seacoast Chief Officers Association

    NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)

IAFC (International Association of Fire Chiefs)

    NH State Firemans Association

    NVFC (National Volunteer Fire Council)

    IEU - Interstate Emergency Unit

The IEU is a coordination of efforts of several towns which lend 'mutual aid' to other towns in consideration of reciprocal services.

Our IEU designation call number is 29, for example: 29-Engine-3. Each town has its own designation number.

Our IEU color code for equipment identification is GREEN. All of our axes, nozzles, and other tools are identified with a Green mark or strip. Each town has its own color (or color combination) to identify tools when they are used in a multijurisdictional scene.
